How to Convert PNG to JPG

1. Open the editor

There are two ways to get started.

  • Start with your image size: On the MiriCanvas website, click [Create a design], then enter the width and height (px) of the image you want to convert under [Manual input]. Your JPG will keep the same proportions as the original.
  • Start with a template: If you already know how you'll use the image, such as for a social media post or thumbnail, pick a template from the [Templates] menu and add your image to it.

2. Upload your PNG image

Go to the [Upload] menu on the left side of the editor, click [Upload], and select the PNG file you want to convert. Once the upload finishes, your image will appear in the list on the left.

3. Place the image on the canvas

Click the image in your uploads list to add it to the canvas. Drag the corners to fit it to the canvas. If the image and canvas sizes don't match, any empty space may be filled with the background color when you save the file.

4. Set the background color and edit

JPG doesn't support transparent backgrounds, so any transparent areas in your PNG will be filled with the canvas background color. If you want a color other than white, change the canvas background color first. You can also crop out what you don't need or add text at this step.

5. Select JPG as the file type

Click the [Download] button in the top right of the editor and choose JPG as the file type. You can also choose a download size based on how you plan to use the image.

6. Download and share

Click [Download] to save your JPG file. You can also download the same design in other formats like PNG or PDF, or share it with a link.

What Is a JPG File?

JPG (JPEG) is an image file format that uses lossy compression to store images like photos at a small file size.

It compresses images by removing information the human eye barely notices, so even color-rich photos can be saved at a much smaller size than PNG. It's the most widely used image format, supported by almost every device, program, and website. However, it doesn't support transparent backgrounds, and quality can degrade slightly each time you re-save it.

Convert PNG to JPG for Lighter Files

PNG keeps quality intact, but its files tend to be large. Photos and screenshots, in particular, can quickly turn into large PNG files, making it easy to hit size limits for email attachments or uploads to online stores and forums.

Converting to JPG reduces file size while keeping the image looking almost the same. Smaller files are faster to upload and send, and images load more quickly on web pages.

Just Upload and Download to Convert

You don't need to find a separate convert button. Upload your PNG image, place it on the canvas, and choose JPG as the file type when you download. That's all it takes. There's no desktop software to download or update. All you need is an internet connection to get started.

Need to convert several images? Add a page for each image, then select all pages when downloading to get multiple JPGs at once.

Fill Transparent Areas With Any Background Color

When you convert a transparent PNG to JPG in other programs, the background is sometimes filled with black or white and doesn't look the way you intended. With MiriCanvas, you can choose the canvas background color before saving as JPG, so your logos or product images appear against your brand color or any background you like. You can also use a background image or pattern instead of a solid color to create a whole new design.

Edit Size and Composition, Item by Item

You don't have to convert the original as is. Crop out what you don't need, or resize it to fit product pages or social media posts before saving as JPG. Applying filters, adjusting brightness and contrast, or adding text and logos takes just a few clicks. There's nothing extra to learn, just select what you want in the settings panel.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

When should I convert PNG to JPG?

Convert when you need to reduce the size of a PNG file or upload an image somewhere that only accepts JPG files. Color-rich images, particularly photos and screenshots, tend to shrink significantly when converted to JPG.

Use it in situations like these:

  • When you can't upload a file because of size limits on email attachments or upload forms.
  • When submitting images for job applications or ID photos that require JPG files.
  • When you're concerned about page load times after posting lots of photos to a blog or online store.

On the other hand, if you need a transparent background, as with logos and icons, or your graphic contains a lot of text, it's better to keep it as PNG. Converting to JPG fills transparent areas with a background color and can blur the edges around text and lines.

What are the different ways to convert PNG to JPG?

You can convert files using apps built into your computer. If you use Paint on Windows, follow these steps:

  1. Open the file: Right-click the PNG file and select [Open with] → [Paint].
  2. Open the save menu: Select [File] → [Save as] at the top.
  3. Choose the format: Select JPEG picture from the list of file types.
  4. Name the file: Choose a save location and enter a file name.
  5. Save: Click [Save] to create a new JPG file of the same image.

On a Mac, open the PNG file in the built-in Preview app, then go to [File] → [Export], change the format to JPEG, and save. You can use the quality slider to balance image quality and file size.

That said, built-in programs make it hard to choose the background color yourself, since transparent areas may be filled with white or black, and they're limited when it comes to editing, such as cropping or adding text. With MiriCanvas, you can set the background color, make the edits you need, and download it directly as a JPG. If you want to convert and edit in one go, give MiriCanvas a try.

What's the difference between PNG and JPG?

Both are among the most widely used image formats, but each works best in different situations.

  • PNG excels at preserving image quality and supporting transparency. As a lossless format, it keeps its quality through repeated saves and supports transparent backgrounds, making it ideal for logos, icons, and graphics with a lot of text. However, its files tend to be large.
  • JPG excels at keeping file sizes small and offering wide compatibility. It stores color-rich images like photos at a small size, but it doesn't support transparent backgrounds, and quality can degrade slightly each time you re-save it.

For example, choose PNG if you want to layer a logo over various designs, and choose JPG if you want to share travel photos at a small file size.

What other image formats are commonly used besides PNG and JPG?

Image formats differ in how they compress images and what features they support, so choose one based on how you plan to use it.

  • WebP: An image format for the web developed by Google. Its files are smaller than PNG and JPG, and it supports transparent backgrounds and animation, but it may not open in some programs.
  • GIF: A format that displays up to 256 colors, used for short, simple animated images.
  • SVG: A vector format that represents images using the coordinates of points and lines. It stays sharp at any size, making it ideal for logos and icons.
