How to Convert WebP to JPG

1. Open the editor

There are two ways to get started.

  • Start with your image size: On the MiriCanvas website, click [Create a design], then enter the width and height (px) of the image you want to convert under [Manual input]. Your JPG will keep the same proportions as the original.
  • Start with a template: If you already know how you'll use the image, such as for a social media post or thumbnail, pick a template from the [Templates] menu and add your image to it.

2. Upload your WebP image

Go to the [Upload] menu on the left side of the editor, click [Upload], and select the WebP file you want to convert. Once the upload finishes, your image will appear in the list on the left.

3. Place the image on the canvas

Click the image in your uploads list to add it to the canvas. Drag the corners to fit it to the canvas. If the image and canvas sizes don't match, any empty space may be filled with the background color when you save the file.

4. Edit as needed

If there's anything you'd like to touch up before converting, you can do it now. Crop out what you don't need, apply a filter, or add text and a logo. If you only need to change the format, you can skip this step.

5. Select JPG as the file type

Click the [Download] button in the top right of the editor and choose JPG as the file type. You can also choose a download size based on how you plan to use the image.

6. Download and share

Click [Download] to save your JPG file. You can also download the same design in other formats like PNG or PDF, or share it with a link.

What Is a WebP File?

WebP is an image file format developed by Google to reduce the file size of images on the web.

It supports both lossy and lossless compression, as well as transparent backgrounds and animation. According to Google, lossless WebP images are about 26% smaller than PNGs, and lossy WebP images are about 25–34% smaller than JPGs of similar quality. Because it helps pages load faster, many websites serve their images as WebP. However, some older programs and website upload forms still don't support WebP.

WebP files are small, but they may not open depending on the recipient's software or platform. Some older image viewers and editing programs don't recognize WebP files. Upload forms on certain online stores and forums may also reject them entirely.

JPG is the most widely used image format, supported by almost every device, program, and website. It can store color-rich images like photos at a reasonable file size, making it a popular choice for document attachments, messaging, and printing.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

When should I convert WebP to JPG?

If you can't open or upload a WebP file where you need to, converting it to JPG usually solves the problem. Since JPG is supported almost everywhere, it helps you avoid file compatibility issues.

Use it in situations like these:

  • When an image saved from the web won't open in your image viewer or editing program.
  • When uploading to sites that only accept JPG or PNG files, such as online stores, forums, or government websites.
  • When attaching images to documents or sending files for print.

However, if you need to keep a transparent background, it's better to convert to PNG instead. JPG doesn't support transparency, so any transparent areas will be filled with a background color.

What are the different ways to convert WebP to JPG?

You can convert files using apps built into your computer. If you use Paint on Windows, follow these steps:

  1. Open the file: Right-click the WebP file and select [Open with] → [Paint].
  2. Open the save menu: Select [File] → [Save as] at the top.
  3. Choose the format: Select JPEG picture from the list of file types.
  4. Name the file: Choose a save location and enter a file name.
  5. Save: Click [Save] to create a new JPG file of the same image.

On a Mac, open the WebP file in the built-in Preview app, then go to [File] → [Export], change the format to JPEG, and save. WebP files may not open, depending on your macOS version.

That said, built-in programs only change the file format and are limited when it comes to editing, such as cropping, resizing, or adding text. With MiriCanvas, you can upload your image, make the edits you need, and download it directly as a JPG. If you want to convert and edit in one go, give MiriCanvas a try.

What's the difference between WebP and JPG?

Both are image formats for photos and graphics, but each works best in different situations.

  • WebP excels at reducing file size. It helps websites load faster and supports transparent backgrounds and animation, but it may not open in older programs or some services.
  • JPG offers the widest compatibility. It opens instantly on almost any device or service. However, because it uses lossy compression, quality can degrade slightly each time you re-save it. It also doesn't support transparent backgrounds.

For example, choose WebP if you want to reduce the size of your website images, and choose JPG if you need a file that anyone you send it to can open.

What other image formats are commonly used besides WebP?

Image formats differ in how they compress images and what features they support, so choose one based on how you plan to use it.

  • PNG: A lossless format with no loss in quality that supports transparent backgrounds. It's commonly used for logos, icons, and images with a lot of text.
  • GIF: A format that displays up to 256 colors, used for short, simple animated images.
  • SVG: A vector format that represents images using the coordinates of points and lines. It stays sharp at any size, making it ideal for logos and icons.
