How to Convert WebP to PNG

1. Open the editor

There are two ways to get started.

  • Start with your image size: On the MiriCanvas website, click [Create a design], then enter the width and height (px) of the image you want to convert under [Manual input]. Your PNG will keep the same proportions as the original.
  • Start with a template: If you already know how you'll use the image, such as for a social media post or thumbnail, pick a template from the [Templates] menu and add your image to it.

2. Upload your WebP image

Go to the [Upload] menu on the left side of the editor, click [Upload], and select the WebP file you want to convert. Once the upload finishes, your image will appear in the list on the left.

3. Place the image on the canvas

Click the image in your uploads list to add it to the canvas. Drag the corners to fit it to the canvas. To keep the background transparent, leave the canvas empty without adding a background color or image.

4. Edit as needed

If there's anything you'd like to touch up before converting, you can do it now. Crop out what you don't need, apply a filter, or add text and a logo. If you only need to change the format, you can skip this step.

5. Select PNG as the file type

Click the [Download] button in the top right of the editor and choose PNG as the file type. To save without a background, select [Transparent background] in the download options. You can also choose a download size based on how you plan to use the image.

6. Download and share

Click [Download] to save your PNG file. You can also download the same design in other formats like JPG or PDF, or share it with a link.

What Is a PNG File?

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is an image file format that uses lossless compression to store images without any loss in quality.

Its quality doesn't degrade no matter how many times you re-save it, and it can display parts of an image as transparent. That's why it's widely used for images where crisp edges matter, such as logos, icons, and graphics with text. Unlike WebP, which focuses on reducing file size, PNG also has the advantage of opening right away in most image editors, websites, and document tools.

Convert WebP to PNG and Keep Quality and Transparency Intact

Logos and illustrations downloaded from the web sometimes come as WebP files that won't open in editing programs or document tools. Converting them to JPG fills the transparent background with color, and lossy compression can blur the edges around text and lines.

Converting to PNG lets you save the image without any loss in quality while keeping the background transparent. Your converted image stays sharp even when layered over other designs or edited and re-saved many times. This makes PNG ideal for storing frequently used images like logos and icons.

You don't have to convert the original as is. Crop out what you don't need, or resize it for your purpose before saving as PNG. Add elements like text, shapes, and illustrations to turn your converted image into a sticker, watermark, or logo draft right away. You can also open a template that fits your purpose and simply swap in your image.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

When should I convert WebP to PNG?

Convert to PNG when you want to use a WebP image elsewhere while keeping its quality and transparent background. Since PNG is a lossless format, there's no loss in quality during conversion, and it opens right away in most editing programs and document tools.

Use it in situations like these:

  • When you want to place a logo or icon from the web onto another design with its transparent background intact.
  • When a WebP file won't open in your image editor or document tool.
  • When you need to store or repeatedly edit graphics containing lots of text or lines without losing sharpness.

On the other hand, if your goal is to share color-rich images like photos at a small file size, JPG may be a better choice than PNG.

What are the different ways to convert WebP to PNG?

You can convert files using apps built into your computer. If you use Paint on Windows, follow these steps:

  1. Open the file: Right-click the WebP file and select [Open with] → [Paint].
  2. Open the save menu: Select [File] → [Save as] at the top.
  3. Choose the format: Select PNG picture from the list of file types.
  4. Name the file: Choose a save location and enter a file name.
  5. Save: Click [Save] to create a new PNG file of the same image.

On a Mac, open the WebP file in the built-in Preview app, then go to [File] → [Export], change the format to PNG, and save. WebP files may not open, depending on your macOS version.

That said, programs like Paint that don't handle transparency properly may turn transparent areas white when saving, and they're limited when it comes to editing, such as cropping or adding text. With MiriCanvas, you can upload your image, make the edits you need, and download it directly as a PNG. If you want to convert and edit in one go, give MiriCanvas a try.

What's the difference between WebP and PNG?

Both image formats support transparent backgrounds, but each works best in different situations.

  • WebP excels at reducing file size. It stores the same image at a smaller size, helping websites load faster. However, it may not open in older programs or some services.
  • PNG excels at preserving image quality and offering wide compatibility. As a lossless format, it keeps its quality through repeated edits and opens almost anywhere, but its files tend to be larger than WebP.

For example, choose WebP if you want to reduce the size of your website images, and choose PNG if you want to use a logo with a transparent background in many places.

What other image formats are commonly used besides WebP?

Image formats differ in how they compress images and what features they support, so choose one based on how you plan to use it.

  • JPG: A format that reduces file size with lossy compression and offers the widest compatibility. It's well suited to color-rich images like photos but doesn't support transparent backgrounds.
  • GIF: A format that displays up to 256 colors, used for short, simple animated images.
  • SVG: A vector format that represents images using the coordinates of points and lines. It stays sharp at any size, making it ideal for logos and icons.
