How to Make an Org Chart

1

Add an org chart

Start from a template: Search "org chart" in the [Templates] menu on the MiriCanvas site, or in the [Templates] menu on the left of the editor. You can start editing right away from a polished design.

Start from a chart (data): Search "org chart" in the [Chart (Data)] menu on the left of the editor to add one.

Start from elements: Place shapes and connectors directly on the canvas from the [Elements] menu on the left to build the structure freely from scratch.

2

Choose an org chart design

If you started from [Templates], narrow by "Presentation (PPT)" or "Business org chart" to find the right template faster. If you started from [Chart (Data)] or [Elements], you can skip this step.

3

Add content and edit the structure

Click the org chart you added to type text right in. Fill in titles and department names, like CEO, division head, team lead, and team member. Add or adjust connectors to show the reporting lines, and add or remove items as needed to refine the structure.

4

Edit the details

In the settings panel on the left, adjust connector style and color, and shape borders and fill colors, item by item. You can also fine-tune font style and text size. Highlighting a specific team or title with color takes just a few clicks.

5

Download and share

Export your finished org chart as PNG, JPG, PDF, PPTX, and more. Drop it straight into a presentation, or share it with a link.

What Is an Org Chart?

An org chart is a diagram that shows how departments are organized, how titles relate to one another, and how responsibility and authority are divided, all at a glance.

Explaining in text who belongs to which team and who reports to whom forces the reader to build the structure in their own head. An org chart turns that structure into a picture and gets it across in one go. Whenever you need to share how an organization is made up, like team intros, internal reporting, or new-hire onboarding, an org chart is the fastest way.

FAQ

When should I use an org chart?

An org chart helps whenever you need to convey how an organization is structured. Reach for one in situations like these:
- Introducing team makeup and roles at a glance (ex: department intro decks or company profiles).
- Including the organizational structure in an internal report or presentation.
- Walking new members through the org structure and reporting lines.
- Sorting out and sharing how roles are split across a project team.

What should an org chart include?

An org chart usually contains three things.
- Titles and roles: The role and position of each member, like CEO, division head, team lead, and team member.
- Department names: The sub-units of the organization, set apart from one another, like Planning, Sales, and HR.
- Chain of command: Who reports to whom and takes direction from whom, shown with connectors.
With all three in place, you get an org chart that makes the structure and flow of the organization clear at a glance.

What types of org charts are there?

The structure changes with the nature and purpose of the organization. Here are three common types.
- Hierarchical (top-down) org chart: The most common form. The chain of command flows down from the top title, so it's mainly used for company department intros and internal reporting.
- Flat org chart: A structure with management layers kept to a minimum. It's often used by startups and small teams that emphasize member autonomy.
- Matrix org chart: A hybrid structure where members belong to both a home department and a project team at once. It suits project-driven organizations where several teams collaborate.
